A Change in Season is a Great Time to Give Your House and Garage the Once-Over

House and Garage: 3 Parts of Your House to Check This Season Including the Garage Door

Winter is around the corner, and in the Charlotte, NC area, this season means wild weather changes, football, and a great time to give your house and garage the once-over. Check for and correct any possible problems, clean those corners you normally overlook, and get your home in good shape ahead of the winter, the holidays, and the new year. Here are three areas that can use some special attention:

1) Crawl Space

The North Carolina summers are known for humidity, heat, and rain. This summer in Charlotte and surrounding areas, like Matthews, Mooresville, Indian Trail, Waxhaw and Weddington, we had all three in abundance. Small, disused spaces, such as the crawl space under your house, become havens for bugs, mold, and other undesirables. Leaks can drip un-noticed, wasting your water and money. If you can’t get under the house yourself, ask a friend or hire someone—save yourself from trouble down the road.

2) Appliances

Appliances work reliably…right up until the day the fridge springs a leak, the dryer stops drying, and the oven stops heating. I’m not suggesting you become paranoid, but there are certain things you can do to keep these machines working well longer.

First, test your appliances to make sure they are working properly. If your oven is running hotter or cooler than it’s set for, you’d better find out before you put the Thanksgiving turkey in to roast! Second, give your machines a good cleaning, inside and out. You want to avoid build-up in any appliance.  Finally, check under and behind your appliances. Built-up dust could cause a fire risk, grime is just gross, and you might just find lost socks, bank statements, mouse droppings, and all sorts of items you need to deal with. If you don’t want to, or can’t, do this step yourself, you can hire a cleaning company.

3) Garage Door

Call me biased on this one, but I consider garage doors important. Actually, I prefer to say that I’m in this business because garage doors are important. The garage door is a major part of the house—just think about how many times you and your family open and shut that door every day. What would you do if it refused to open? Or refused to close? Have you ever seen a garage door go off its rails and drop? I have, and you do not want it to happen. A simple visit by a licensed garage door company, to check the sensors, the gears, and the other components, can save you from hassle—and injury.

The crawl space, your appliances, and your garage door–all are critical to keeping your home safe, clean, and enjoyable. What better time to check on them than at the beginning of a new season?
