How to Prepare Your Garage for Winter

It’s that time of the year; the Charlotte area is starting to see cold weather. As you start to prepare your home for the winter season, don’t forget your garage!

Lubricate All Moving Parts

Your garage door is one of the largest moving parts of your home, and it requires attention every few months.  Autumn is a good time to apply more lubricant to the tracks, springs, rollers, and hinges. Ten minutes of work will go a long way towards keeping your garage door in working order through the winter.

Pro-tip: do not use WD-40 on garage door parts, it’s not a true lubricant. Instead, try a silicone spray.

Check Your Balance

The weight of a garage door should be balanced by the pull of its springs, making the door seem weightless to open. If the springs aren’t working properly, the opening mechanism has to lift some or all of the weight of the door and could be damaged by the stress. Damaged springs are also a major safety issue. If the movement of the door, or the sounds it makes while opening and closing, has changed, call a professional to come take a look.

Replace the Weather Stripping

Garage door weather strips keep out cold air, and, if necessary, water. Without it, you might was well leave the door partly open. As the winter comes on, check the weather stripping and, if necessary, replace it.

Inspect the rollers

The often-overlooked garage door roller attaches the garage door to the tracks. If something were to go wrong with the rollers, it could lead to major damage for your door. You should inspect your garage door rollers at least twice per year.

Paying Attention

In general, you know how your garage door looks and sounds when it’s working right, so if you notice something seems off, you’re probably right. Fall is a good time to look, listen, inspect, and to take care of any maintenance issues that have come up. And if you have any questions or if your door or opener need repair, give us a call!
